Garlic Cloves – Elephant/ Russian Garlic
Allium ampeloprasum
Organically grown
Mixed Clove sizes, mostly medium sized.
This variety of garlic produces huge cloves which have a sweet, mild flavour which is like a cross between onion and true garlic.. The bulbs can become huge and weigh up to 500g, consisting of 4-6 large cloves.
Does well in hot humid climates where regular garlic doesn’t grow.
Plant so that the tops of the bulbs are 5cm below the soil surface, plant 30cm apart
Sow March-May, Harvest November-December. Plants will begin to die back at the end of the growing period, harvest when 6-7 green leaves are remaining.
Dig the whole plant up and dry out the bulbs leaving the stem intact. Bulbs will store for up to 10 months.
Depending on climate, when grown from cloves they may only form a 'round' in the first year which is large single bulb. These can be eaten or left in the ground, they will go on to form a large bulb full of cloves the following year.
