This plant is a lovely annual native to the tropics and has been cultivated in gardens since 1570. This variety has scarlet red flowers and dark foliage on semi dwarf plants growing 75-90cm. The flower spike can last for as long as 8 weeks! This variety is also used as a vegetable in Africa where the leaves can be boiled and used like spinach.
