Bean ‘Winged’
Also called Goa bean or Asparagus Pea
Psophocarpus tetragonolobus
10 seeds
This is a vigorous tropical climber with deep blue flowers and four angled pods with feathery margins. All parts of the plant are edible – the pods, flowers, leaves and tubers. It is unsuitable for cool climates and is very frost and cool sensitive but performs excellently under warm, humid conditions. Germination requires soil temperatures of above 25 degrees C. This is a short lived perennial which dies back every year before shooting again in the warmer months. It also requires a large area to support it such as a 3m trellis.
*Note: this is a tropical plant and may not flower in climates outside the tropics.
Sow in Nov-Dec in subtropical areas and Oct-Jan in the tropics. Sow on 25mm deep at 25+ degrees C, germinates 7-10d. Sow direct, full sun with 30-60cm between seeds. For best germination - rub lightly with sandpaper or sit in warm water until seeds swell, before sowing. Harvest 60 days
